One dog, two owners: a proposal for the canine registry

Thesis type: Experimental

Thesis topic: Provisional title: “Responsible ownership and prevention of abandonment: Proposal for dual registration in the canine registry”

This thesis aims to examine a proposed amendment to the canine registry, which would introduce the concept of a 'backup owner' or co-registrant. This individual would be responsible for the dog should the primary owner become unable to fulfil their duties. The dual objective is to prevent abandonment and reduce the number of dogs entering shelters, while encouraging citizens to take greater responsibility for their pets

Research activity:

  • Analyse the issue of secondary abandonment following unforeseen events affecting the owner;
  • Assess the acceptability and feasibility of dual registration among key stakeholders;
  • Propose an experimental registry model that includes this possibility.

Applied methods: Design a structured questionnaire tailored to selected groups, such as veterinarians, dog owners, shelter managers, animal welfare association representatives and public administrators. Alternatively, or in addition, organise thematic focus groups for deeper qualitative analysis. Data will be analysed using statistical tools, and the results will be interpreted from normative, ethical and management perspectives.

Activity start date: June/July 2025

Proposal deadline: January/February 2026

Additional information: This work may be carried out in collaboration with local animal protection organisations and institutions (municipal shelters, animal rights offices, health authorities and associations). Useful candidate skills: interest in animal ethics and companion animal welfare. The ability to critically analyse laws and practices is also required.
